Counseling
Middle / High school Counseling
The relationship a school counselor has with her students is a core component of the counseling program at Whiteford Agricultural Schools. The counselors value the relationship with each of the students and strive to provide support for all students. Counselors are also a resource for parents. Parents should feel free to contact the school counselor if they have any questions or concerns.
Our services provide brief individual counseling and/or small groups to help students learn to cope with situations and be able to go back to the classroom with confidence. This is not intensive therapy; school counseling is designed to be brief and generalized. Counselors also make classroom visits to teach social/emotional lessons to reach all students. Any additional services may be referred out by the counselor to local area resources to offer more support.

social emotional learning (SEL)
Social-emotional learning (SEL) plays a fundamental role in education and human development. SEL is the process in which individuals develop self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making skills, all of which are important for school and life success. People with stronger SEL skills have a better chance of being able to cope with and learn from challenges, which can have a long-term positive effect on both kids and adults.
SEL RESOURCES:
Understanding Child Development - Every child is different. Everyone has different strengths, areas of improvement, and personalities. Some of these traits can be determined by genetics, while some traits can be developed by environment. Learn more about the stages of child development.
Goal Setting and Finding Motivation - According to studies, “motivation is one of the driving forces behind human behavior.” The absence of motivation can lead to a downhill slope in a person’s mental health; however, having motivation and setting goals can provide a sense of purpose and meaning and can better someone’s quality of life. Learn about sources of motivation and how to set goals.
What is ADHD? - Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattentiveness, and distractibility. Symptoms of ADHD can interfere with a person’s life in a variety of ways, and managing ADHD can be a challenge. Learn more about ADHD, its history, its causes, and treatment options.
Fostering Positive Friendships - Friendships at any age can be difficult to navigate. Research shows that having a sense of belonging within a friendship helps children adapt to life changes and function better in the world. Click the link above for information on how to help support a positive and healthy friendship.
dual enrollment
Policy Clarification
In general, the district policy regarding cumulative grade point average and course credit, optional in the law, is:
- Courses taken in post secondary institutions will not be included in the cumulative grade point average, but notation of grade and credit will be included on the transcript upon verification of completion
- Post secondary courses of three (3) semester hours or greater will be granted one-half (1/2) high school credit. Post secondary courses less than three (3) semester hours will be granted one-quarter (1/4) high school credit.
Dual Enrollment at MCCC / University of Toledo
In an effort to better meet students’ needs and interests, school districts allow students to take courses at local colleges or universities in addition to their high school coursework. This opportunity is known as dual enrollment.
Students may participate in dual enrollment through Monroe County Community College (MCCC) or the University of Toledo (UT). Through the University of Toledo, students can also take a college course at Whiteford, where a UT professor comes to the high school. This option is called Direct College – College Credit Plus.
Please be advised that the content/curriculum of courses are approved and controlled through the University of Toledo, and are not influenced by Whiteford Schools. Some of the content/curriculum might be new to students, especially sophomores, and some content may be at a college-maturity level. Because this is a university-level course, the material is designed for adult learners and may include topics or language not typically used in K-12 classrooms. Some readings, discussions, or examples may include topics intended for a college audience. The courses are taught by the university, the school district cannot alter or remove course materials in order for a student to receive college credit.
Students interested in pursuing skilled trades may apply to take courses at MCCC that lead to industry certifications.
Whiteford High School students who are considering Dual Enrollment or Direct College with both the University of Toledo and MCCC must be accepted by Whiteford High School (WHS) and the college institution. WHS will pay the full cost of tuition and fees for the semester unless the student fails the course or withdraws after the deadline. The course textbook required by the professor can be purchased by the student in a hardcover or digital format, and the student can be reimbursed by the district if the proper reimbursement paperwork is submitted to the WHS office prior to the completion of the course. WHS will not reimburse for textbooks or materials not required by the professor or if the course is dropped.
Students are responsible to manage the calendar of each institution (i.e. final exams at WHS, testing for juniors, variation in course start dates versus WHS, variation in spring break dates, cancellation due to weather, athletics etc.)
Students who are interested in dual enrollment should notify Ms. Head during scheduling so the enrollment process can begin.
